The Interesting History of The Lanyard
The lanyard is the invention of the common sailor. Historians are not certain of the exact person who created the first lanyard. However, they are positive that the lanyard was the brain child of the men who lived and worked aboard tall ships.
These men were expected to climb into the rigging of the ship no matter what the weather conditions. This task was extremely hazardous. It was made even more dangerous by the fact that they would often have to climb while they were carrying different tools. The most common tool that they would need to have with them would have been a knife.
To increase their chances of being able to perform this chore safely and quickly, sailors devised the lanyard. No matter what they were wearing or doing they would have their knife right at their fingertips. There is no telling how many lives this simple device saved over the years. However, there can be no denying the fact that the value of this tool was recognized, and it spread and evolved.
